Baker Artist Awards
Please visit me at the Baker Artist Awards website.
The William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund supports Baltimore's artists, the city's rich and diverse cultural offerings and the participation of its residents in the region's creative life.
Mary Sawyers Baker, one of Baltimore's early philanthropists, studied voice as a young girl in Paris and embraced the arts throughout her life. She established the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund in 1964 to honor her husband, a well-known Baltimore civic leader. In 2007, the Fund narrowed its philanthropic mission to focus exclusively on arts and culture; and in 2008, the Fund’s Board of Governors established the Mary Sawyers Baker Awards, up to three annual prizes of $25,000, to honor its founder. The first prizes were awarded in 2009.

Reception: 6pm to 9pm, with a panel of artist presentations and discussion at 7:30 pm in room S101.This exhibition of beyond the pale fiber artists outlines the creative explorations of our alumni sistren and brethren, varying between recent grads to those long established. Each of these artists has embraced the community of Baltimore as their own, and has become part of its thriving art scene. They highlight the vast interpretations, materials, and media that encompass fiber art while working with a multitude of processes. "Sew Local!" showcases fiber works employing techniques ranging from felting and weaving, to piece-work and paper cuts, to multi-media installation, costume, and performance.
Our 7:30 panel will show the bodies of work of three of the artists participating in "Sew Local!". The presentations will focus upon the evolution of their individual working processes, the Baltimore community as both a supportive network and a creative influence, as well as the ways in which these artists make a living to support themselves and their work. Questions and general discussion with each artist will be possible and encouraged.

The Rooms Play is a collaborative, immersive theatrical experience that asks the viewer to become a participant in the performance. There are twenty- two rooms to walk through, and each one is directed by a different team of 1-5 local artists and musicians. Each space in The Rooms Play functions like a scene of a play, and the audience members are integral to the scene’s unfolding. UPDATE June 2011: we met our goal and won the kickstarter campaign!
